Added more than 100 sites to WebAnalyticsUpdate search engine

Maybe this is useful: Today I have added more than 100 sites to the Web Analytics Search Engine on the page www.WebAnalyticsUpdate.com

The search engine is based on Google's Custom Search technology and covers more than 100 weblogs, magazines, useful tools, consultants, leading experts and companies of the web analytics industry.

Whenever you are looking for some special information about Web Analytics just go to www.WebAnalyticsUpdate.com and you will have the latest news on some Web Analytics weblogs and magazines at a glance as well as a search box which delivers you clean seach results without all the disturbing off-topic search results.

I will continue adding more and more sites and feeds. If you have ideas or wishes for more sites to add to the search engine or more weblogs and magazines with rss feeds to add to the WebAnalyticsUpdate news mashup, please send your suggestions to webanalyticsupdate [at] gmail.com or post them here in the comments to this blogpost. About Search Quality and writing search engine optimized content

Yesterday I had a talk with one of the editors of our magazine about different search optimization topics. During this meeting we also talked about the possibilities of preparing content which can be really found in search engines and which factors can influence the ranking of web page contents on the search engine result pages.

First it is necessary to speak the language of the targeted audience. In contrast to printed magazines it could be a mistake trying to use the scientifically correct terms. Keywords that are not widely known and used for search queries cannot be found, if nobody searches for them. On the other hand only keywords that are mentioned on a page can deliver hints for Google that this page could be related to a certain topic. The main point is to be aware of the goals of a search engine that Udi Manber describes from the viewpoint of Google:
"[..] the goal is always the same: improve the user experience. This is not the main goal, it is the only goal." - Udi Manber on the Official Google Blog
Good search results are one of the key factors for a good experience. And Search Engine Providers like Google will continously improve their quality. One of the most effective ways will be always to write honest and really useful content for the targeted audience.

WebAnalytics Update brings essential news at a glance

In some cases I do not like to use a desktop based feed reader software or my Google Reader to keep an overview about a certain topic. Then I find other possibilities to keep informed about recent discussions. For example for WebAnalytics I built a page with a small collection of some WebAnalytics weblogs for a quick overview about recent posts and news in the WebAnalytics world. Additionally it contains a search form for a custom search engine which provides a search for all the pages of which I collect the feeds. The WebAnalyticsUpdate can be found on my main domain. From time to time I will add more useful feeds. If you have some suggestions, recommendations or tipps for additions, please feel free to mention them here in the comments. I will consider to add them in the next update.

Visualizing hot and cold click zones on a webpage

A nice little tool for visualizing visitor behaviour is the free tool clickheat from labsmedia. After installing it on a directory on the webserver (e.g. /clickheat/) and inserting a small JavaScript code in the source code of the pages that you want to measure it will log visitor's clicks on your page and display them on a transparent layer on your webpage in form of a heatmap. "Hot" areas are displayed in red color, and cold zones will be displayed in blue color.

This kind of statistical visualisation can assist your decision making process regarding the correct placement of certain elements on your page.
